During a frenzied marathon of a press conference Thursday, President Donald Trump asked black veteran journalist April Ryan if she was "friends" with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and requested she set up a meeting with them.
But Ryan used the abbreviation "CBC" for the Congressional Black Caucus at first - and Trump didn't appear to know what she was referring to.
"Are they friends of yours?"
"I'm sure", Ryan said. "I also sincerely have no idea why the president made this claim in response to an unrelated question about the Congressional Black Caucus".
Mr. Cummings served as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus from 2003 to 2005.
It's hard to imagine Trump offering the same response if a white reporter had asked him the same question.
The organization posted a Tweet shortly after the press conference indicating a letter was sent to Trump just before his inauguration. After the presser concluded, he pushed back and said Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer did not instruct Cummings to do any such thing.

It also says he was in the pay of convicted Venezuelan drug lord Walid Makled for the protection of drug shipments. He went on to study law and criminology and made a name for himself in Venezuela by cracking down on drug gangs.
"He was probably told by Schumer - or some other lightweight - 'Don't meet with Trump". "But thank you for answering my questions". "I'm not a facilitator, I'm not a convener", she said.
"We called, called, called, they can't make a meeting with him".
"I was all set to have the meeting", he said. Trump has called the Palm Beach club his "Winter White House".
Ryan has already been in the news recently after she ended up in a confrontation with Trump communications official Omarosa Manigault.
"I was all set to have that meeting". She responded by telling the President that she's a reporter. "I do want to solve the problem".
Cummings said he was actually looking forward to meeting with Trump to talk about the price of prescription drugs, which he had been collaborating with Sen.
The CBC didn't take long to respond, sending out a tweet accusing Trump of not responding to their January 19 letter that highlighted its concerns with Trump's "New Deal for Black America". I think it's probably what got me a much higher percentage of the African-American vote than a lot of people thought I was going to get'. He went on to describe how people "lock themselves into apartments petrified to even leave in the middle of the day" in urban areas for fear of crime in the cities.
