Li was quoted as saying that the women and children bought tickets and entered the zoo without incident, but the two men ignored warnings, and chose instead to try scaling the walls of the tiger enclosure to gain free entry.
Accompanied by a pal, he scaled the three metre wall only to be mauled to death by a tiger as two more beasts watched on.
The dead man surnamed Zhang, from Hubei Province, was among a group of six who visited Ningbo Youngor Zoo in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, at 2pm on Sunday, according to fellow traveler surnamed Li.
It is not yet known why the man entered the enclosure and authorities have opened an investigation.
One tiger dragged the man into the enclosure woods by his foot.
Zookeepers attempted to halt the attack with fireworks and water cannons, before they shot one of the tigers dead.
