Gloria Diaz bagged the Philippines' first Miss Universe crown in 1969.

Filipino designers also created the gowns of some contestants: Jearson Demavivas for Miss Canada Siera Bearchell, Leo Almodal for Miss Great Britain Jamie-Loee Faulkner and Jian Lisala for Miss Sierra Leone Hawa Kamara.

For her national costume, Medina wore an ensemble inspired by the traditional vinta boat.

It was indeed a night of beauty, glitter, and glamor as the 86 candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant put their best stilettos forward at Thursday night's Preliminary Competition. Later on, they showcased their colorful, whimsical and meaningful national costumes.

More than anyone else, Barbados is rooting for its Shannon Harris to be that lucky lady, anxious to serve up a welcome befitting a queen if she wins the heart of the judges.

Despite a wardrobe malfunction, Miss USA confidently strutted the stage wearing a silver warrior costume and carried a shield reminiscent to Marvel comic book superhero Captain America. Figures up to the time of publication showed that she had secured more than 237 250 votes more than her closest Caribbean rival, Miss Belize.

In a recorded video shown during the preliminary pageant on Thursday, Medina said former first lady Imelda Marcos "invented the terno".

Maxine Medina looked stunning in her elegant emerald dress, designed by Rhett Eala. The terno became less fashionable when the Americans took over the Philippines in the 1930s.

Medina, 26, said she would have an interpreter "just in case" she would make it to the question-and-answer portion of the beauty contest.
