The Renewable Heat Incentive scheme was launched by the Northern Irish assembly in 2012, with a target of 10 per cent of heat generation to come from renewable sources.

The Sinn Féin politician stepped down in response to First Minister Arlene Foster's handling of the ongoing "cash for ash" controversy.

The north's political parties are preparing for a snap election.

Sinn Féin in Donegal will hold a meeting this Sunday for its members and supporters following the resignation of Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister. Picture by Jonathan Porter/Press Eye DUP leader Arlene Foster, along with her party colleagues, holds a press conference at DUP headquarters.

Martin McGuinness, one of the long-time leaders of the republican Sinn Fein party, resigned as Northern Ireland's deputy first minister on Monday, to protest against the handling of an energy scheme that cost more than expected.

"So it is they who are holding back the inquiry and that's very regrettable and I hope they reflect on that now and take that nonsense out of the terms of reference and let us get on with an independent inquiry", she said.

He added: "The refusal of Arlene Foster to recognise the public anger or to exhibit any humility in the context of the RHI scandal is indicative of a deep-seated arrogance".

Communist Party of Ireland chair Lynda Walker blamed the DUP's "lack of transparency" for the crisis, saying Mr McGuinness had no option but to resign.

However, alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) experienced a strong uplift in demand, up 22.2% across the year. Petrol cars accounted for 49.0% of the market, while diesel-powered cars made up the remaining 47.7%.

On June 5 2008 he was re-appointed as deputy First Minister to serve alongside Peter Robinson, who succeeded Paisley as First Minister.

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire said he was working to preserve the province's devolved government, after a "breakdown in trust" between the two main parties that share power in Belfast.

The state-funded RHI was supposed to offer a proportion of the cost businesses had to pay to run eco-friendly boilers, but the subsidy tariffs were set too high and without a cap, so it ended up paying out significantly more than the price of fuel. This created a "burn to earn" incentive - with applicants able to access free heat and make a sizeable profit while doing so.

Foster refused repeated calls to step aside while the scheme was investigated.

Mrs Foster had previously rejected calls for her to reisign.

She said there should be an inquiry into RHI regardless of the outcome of his departure.

"I have a terrible feeling that a campaign with the usual slogans producing the same results, there might be the possibility of things being different", he told the BBC's Today programme.
