"To build a successful live TV service, you have to have viewers' favorite sports and shows - and CBS' programming is absolutely vital to that mix", Hopkins said in a statement. As Sling TV and DirecTV Now have come to market, observers have wondered whether a rollout of its multichannel streaming service was slowed by having to balance the demands of Hulu's many strong-willed owners. Sling now offers the cheapest plan, $20 a month for about 30 channels.
The new service will be priced under $40 and include its on-demand library and cloud DVR capability, said Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins separately at the Citi Internet, Media & Telecoms conference.
The network will not offer full seasons of current shows such as "NCIS" to Hulu live-streaming subscribers, and will instead only provide "a few recent episodes of such shows" on demand, said the Journal.
On Wednesday, Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins revealed that the company's upcoming live TV service, a competitor to cable TV, will cost "under $40" per month, Variety reports. He also said that the service would launch in the next couple of months, keeping consistent with earlier remarks that it would be available in early 2017.
Uber has removed its self-driving cars from San Francisco roads
But Uber said California's laws on autonomous vehicles didn't apply because its cars need a passenger to actively monitor things. The company had been locked in a row with the California Department of Motor Vehicles since the trial in San Francisco began.
Hulu has been putting the pieces in place for its live TV bundle since last spring, when it first announced its plans. "You're going to try each of these out", Hopkins acknowledged. Hulu has also struck deals with part-owners Fox and Disney.
The streaming company already has similar deals with Time Warner Inc., 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney Co., allowing it to live stream CNN, Fox, ESPN and several other channels.
Under the deal, the New York-based broadcaster's sports programming, including its National Football League games and the NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship, as well as CBS Sports Network and POP, an entertainment channel, will be on Hulu. Hopkins also said that Hulu is in "active discussions" with part-owner NBCUniversal about adding their channels to the lineup. Since its launch in 2008, Hulu has been at the forefront of entertainment and technology and continues to redefine TV by connecting viewers with the stories they love. Hopkins said that its original programming investment will double this year as it debuts projects including The Handmaid's Tale and Seth Rogen comedy Future Man. Hopkins pointed out that while a specific price has yet to be figured out, it wouldn't be an introductory fee. But he did say that the company's subscriber base and revenues were growing "in excess of 30 percent annually".
There may be one problem with Hulu's announcement.
