Federal investigators say a former Michigan State University athletic trainer accused of sexual assault may have dozens more victims than previously known. "I can tell you we take allegations of sexual abuse very seriously", Cody said.
"Our police, the lead investigative agency in the Nassar case, are devoting significant resources to the criminal investigation against him and are vigorously reviewing all complaints and working through them with the state Attorney General's office and federal U.S. Attorney's Office", he said.
Charles testified that a teen girl has alleged that Nassar sexually assaulted her during medical appointments between the fall of 2015 and earlier this year. Nassar was immediately reassigned from all of his clinical duties.
According to the lawsuit, around 2001, Lopez refused to see Nassar for treatment, and MSU "pressured and coerced" her to declare herself medically inactive. "He treats elite athletes just like yourself", Lopez said.
During the course of Nassar's treatments, Nassar allegedly inserted "his bare, un-gloved and unlubricated hand into her vagina".
When Lopez reported this incident, this time to a higher-ranking trainer than before, the person expressed concern before referring her to one of the heads of the department Nassar worked in, the filing says.
Stocks Firmly Higher in Rebound From Fed-Triggered Selloff
The US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday and signalled a faster pace of increases in 2017. The Fed's move Wednesday, only the second rate hike in the past decade, came on a unanimous 10-0 vote.
The FBI recovered videos that showed Nassar sexually assaulting young girls in a pool, Charles said.
"Lopez claims she told three separate Michigan State athletic trainers about Nassar's actions, which included "[touching] her vagina" and, when he "became more bold", having her "remove her trousers, and then inserting his bare, ungloved and unlubricated hand into her vagina". Lopez alleges that Nassar sexually abused her during medical exams more than 10 times during a three-year period.
In 1998, when Lopez was a sophomore on the Spartans softball team, the university sent her to Nassar to be treated for chronic lower back pain. She was a member of the USA Junior Olympic Team that won a silver medal at the Junior Women's World Championship in 1999. "I feel guilty, not because I did anything wrong, but because I was not able to come forward sooner and perhaps protect other young girls from Dr. Nassar".
The latest allegations are separate from charges against Nassar of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in MI involving a child under 13. Lopez is the first former MSU student to file join the suit.
The allegations made this summer and fall against Nassar have prompted police and prosecutors to reopen the criminal investigation stemming from that 2014 medical appointment for hip pain, officials said.
Though Nassar's attorneys have defended his actions in September as medical procedures occasionally warranting vaginal penetration, attorneys declined to comment Wednesday.
