But South Yorkshire MP Louise Haigh said the funds do nothing to address price discrepancies which are hindering take up in rural areas, while other critics claimed the copper wiring used in some areas by BT Openreach to deliver faster speeds is already outdated and that rural communities should be able to influence the way in which better connectivity is delivered.

Ministers set up the BDUK project to provide superfast broadband - defined as 24Mbps - to 95% of the United Kingdom by December next year. If your remote, leaky, moss-covered exchange is still down as waiting for something to happen to lift your connection speed into double figures, this could help.

"Around 4.5million premises have been given access to superfast broadband through the government's £1.7 billion Broadband Delivery UK rollout, with more than 1.5 million signing up for a faster connection".

"Strong take-up and robust value-for-money measures mean £442 million will be available for reinvestment where it matters, such as here in the Cotswolds - putting more connections in the ground".

Around 4.5 million premises are now said to have been given access to superfast broadband through the GBP1.7 billion BDUK rollout, with the DCMS claiming that more than 90% of the United Kingdom can get a superfast connection, up from 45% in 2010.

Cold Monday, but Warmer Temperatures Ahead
The temperatures won't be quite as cold where low clouds linger and the best chance for that sets up east of I-65. We expect mostly sunny skies and very comfortable temperatures with highs in the mid to upper 40s.

The £292m figure includes £133m allocated for regions around the United Kingdom, with £13.6m to be spent in Yorkshire.

Culture secretary Karen Bradley said the funding would benefit about 600,000 extra premises.

Mrs Bradley also urged people to sign superfast broadband contracts, warning people that their internet speeds will not be "boosted automatically" when connection is extended to their area.

Today's announcement is not new money, Think Broadband's Andrew Ferguson has pointed out, but a cumulative total that includes previous clawback money that started with £129m announced in July 2015.

United Kingdom government minister for Scotland, Andrew Dunlop, said: "Good connectivity is essential for the way we live our lives - whether that is doing business, teaching our children, or paying our bills".
