Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BJP's performance in parliamentary, assembly and local elections across India over the last few days illustrates that people want all-round progress and will not tolerate corruption and misgovernance. The party had a clean sweep in elections held in two municipalities and one taluka panchayat. Be it the Northeast, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, or Gujarat, BJP has performed well everywhere. "However, at present we can say the people have accepted the BJP", said Ghanshyam Shah, a political analyst.
The State Election Commission had announced elections to 134 seats in district panchayats, taluka panchayats and municipalities.
The BJP had to face defeat in Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde's Parli municipality where her estranged cousin Dhananjay Munde led the NCP to a clear victory.
Union minister Prakash Javadekar said BJP's big gain in Maharashtra is an indication of which way the wind is blowing. In taluka panchayat by-polls, BJP won five out of 9 and Congress bagged four seats.
